The History of the Unity Movement

In 1881, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, the co-founders of Unity, married and soon after moved to Kansas City, MO. Myrtle was diagnosed with tuberculosis, what was an incurable disease at the time. Myrtle and Charles attended many health lectures trying to find a way to heal her chronic illness. She was inspired by a New Thought lecture by metaphysician Dr. E.B. Weeks who stated,

Myrtle Fillmore

“I AM a child of God,

therefore I do not inherit sickness.”

For two years after that lecture, Myrtle incorporated affirmative prayer and meditation on healing into her daily life. In 1888, Myrtle was completely healed. Charles was so impressed by his wife’s recovery and her masterful use of affirmative prayer and meditation, that he too began a process of recovery from a childhood accident. They both became devoted students of philosophy, religion and spirituality because they had seen the positive impacts in their own lives.

In 1890, they organized a prayer group that would later be called “Silent Unity” – which still operates to this day. In 1891, Charles named their organization “Unity” and Unity Magazine was first published.

On Dec 7, 1892, Charles and Myrtle wrote their Dedication and Covenant:

“We, Charles Fillmore and Myrtle Fillmore, husband and wife, hereby dedicate ourselves, our time, our money, all we have and all we expect to have, to the Spirit of Truth, and through it, to the Society of Silent Unity.

It being understood and agreed that the said Spirit of Truth shall render unto us an equivalent for this dedication, in peace of mind, health of body, wisdom, understanding, love, life and an abundant supply of all things necessary to meet every want without our making any of these things the object of our existence.

In the presence of the Conscious Mind of Christ Jesus, this 7th day of December, A.D. 1892”

And so it was.
And so it is.

Today, Unity honors the universal truths in all religions. We are all spokes on the wheel, with the hub being God. Our essence is the same, and whatever religion we are born into or find, we are all seeking to know the One. Unity does not deny anyone the right to their own beliefs. We invite people to explore Unity teachings and use what works best for them on their spiritual path.
